A single Idea leuconoe — the giant tree nymph, sometimes called the paper kite — floats at the centre of a deep eight-inch box. Its wings are the colour of old vellum, translucent white crossed by ink-black veins and stippled with spots that look hand-drawn. In flight this species barely seems to beat its wings at all; it drifts. Pinned, it keeps that same weightlessness.

Around it I have set dried marigolds and poppy heads harvested at the end of last season, arranged so the eye travels in a slow spiral from the lower left up through the forewing. The backing is hand-aged paper, tea-stained and sealed, and the whole piece is closed behind glass with a conservation-grade seal.

The specimen was farm-raised. Nothing here was taken from a wild population.

Acid-free foam backing, hand-finished ground layer, stainless steel entomological pins, acid-free spacer and UV-filtering acrylic glazing behind a continuous dust seal. Hanging hardware fitted before sealing. Signed, dated and annotated with the species and its source on the reverse.
