Roughly half of what goes into a shadow box was once a plant, and dried flora is where most first attempts fail. The specimen is bought ready to use. The flowers you have to make, and the difference between a marigold that keeps its orange for a decade and one that turns to brown confetti in eight months is entirely a matter of method and timing.
Four methods, when to use each, a difficulty table by species, and the mistakes I made so you do not have to.
Harvesting: get this wrong and nothing else helps
Preservation cannot improve a flower. It can only slow down what is already happening. So the input matters more than the technique.
Timing within the day
Cut in mid-morning — after dew has fully evaporated, before the afternoon heat has started to stress the plant. Surface moisture at cutting is the single most common cause of mould in a press. Wet petals do not dry, they rot, slowly, between sheets of blotting paper where you cannot see them.
Timing within the bloom
Cut just before peak. A flower at absolute peak is already committed to the next phase and will drop petals during drying. One that is nearly open holds together and continues to open very slightly as it dries.
Timing within the season
Late-season blooms are generally tougher, with more lignified stems and lower water content. They press better. Early-season growth is soft and floppy and takes longer to stabilise.
Never press anything you have not identified
Sap from some common garden plants is a contact irritant, and a few — giant hogweed most notoriously — cause phytophotodermatitis: severe blistering triggered when the sap on your skin meets sunlight. If you do not know what it is, leave it.
The four methods
1 · Flat pressing
The oldest and still the most useful for two-dimensional work. Material goes between sheets of absorbent paper — blotting paper, newsprint, unglazed cartridge — inside a press under even pressure.
Timing: 2–4 weeks. Critical detail: change the papers at 24 hours, again at 72 hours, then weekly. Most failed presses are simply presses that were never reopened; the paper saturates, stops wicking, and the material sits in its own moisture.
Best for: ferns, violets, pansies, cosmos, single-layer flowers, leaves, grasses, anything you want flat.
Avoid for: anything with a thick central boss — roses, dahlias, peonies. The centre will not dry before the petals go brown.
2 · Silica gel
The method that keeps three-dimensional form and, crucially, keeps colour. Flowers are buried in fine silica gel crystals in an airtight container; the gel pulls moisture out fast while physically supporting every petal.
Timing: 2–7 days depending on density. Critical detail: check daily after day two. Over-drying makes petals so brittle they shatter at a touch — this is a real failure mode and it happens fast.
Best for: roses, zinnias, marigolds, dahlias, hydrangea florets — anything where the shape is the point.
Note: indicator gel changes colour when spent and can be dried and reused indefinitely in a low oven. It is not a consumable.
3 · Air drying
Bundles hung upside down in a dark, dry, well-ventilated space. Effectively free.
Timing: 2–4 weeks. Critical detail: dark is not optional. Light during air drying is what bleaches everything to that sad uniform beige people associate with dried flowers.
Best for: statice, strawflower, lavender, yarrow, grasses, poppy seed heads, most things with naturally low water content.
4 · Glycerine
The odd one out: it does not dry the material, it replaces the water in it. Stems stand in a solution of roughly one part glycerine to two parts warm water and draw it up over one to three weeks. The result stays supple and slightly leathery indefinitely.
Best for: foliage — eucalyptus, beech, magnolia, ivy, fern fronds.
Warning for shadow-box use: glycerine-treated material is hygroscopic. It pulls moisture from the air and can weep in humid conditions. I do not seal it behind glass. Use it for open arrangements only.
A difficulty table
Ratings are from my own results, working in a temperate climate with a domestic press and ordinary silica gel.

Holding colour
Colour loss has three separate causes and they need three separate answers.
- Enzymatic browning. Cell damage releases enzymes that oxidise phenolic compounds — the same reaction that browns a cut apple. It is fast, and speed is the only defence. The quicker material goes from stem to press or silica, the less browning occurs. Anything left in a bag on the counter for two hours has already started.
- Light bleaching. Photodegradation of pigment, during drying and afterwards. Dry in the dark; display behind UV-filtering glazing.
- Slow oxidation. Ongoing reaction with atmospheric oxygen over years. A sealed box slows this simply by limiting the available air.
Which pigments survive
Broadly: carotenoids (orange and yellow — marigold, calendula) are the most stable and are why marigolds are a dried-flora staple. Anthocyanins (red, purple, blue) are pH-sensitive and the least predictable; the same violet can dry navy, plum or grey depending on the tissue chemistry on the day. Chlorophyll (green) degrades fastest of all, which is why dried foliage yellows first and why glycerine — which preserves structure rather than colour — is the usual answer for leaves.
Commercial dried-flower dyes exist and I do not use them. They fade unevenly, they read as synthetic under close inspection, and in a sealed box they can off-gas. If a colour will not survive honestly, I choose a different flower.
Getting it into the box
Three rules, learned expensively.
Rest before sealing. Material that feels dry can still hold moisture in stems and receptacles. I rest everything for a minimum of seven days in open air, in the room where it will be assembled, before it goes anywhere near glazing. Sealing damp flora is the number one cause of condensation and mould in shadow boxes and it is completely avoidable.
Attach with points, not beads. Small dots of reversible, pH-neutral adhesive at structural points — stem junctions, the back of a calyx. Never a bead across a petal: the adhesive migrates into the tissue, darkens as it cures, and cannot be removed.
Build from the back forward. Backing, then ground, then flora, then the specimen last. The insect is the most fragile and most expensive element in the box and should spend the least possible time exposed while tweezers are moving around above it.
